Centering wellness this winter season is a must. Everyone deserves a day for themselves, time to unwind and the chance to eat good. Treating yourself to a wellness experience while supporting a Black-owned business is definitely a win-win in BLACK FOODIE’s book. So I took a detour from my regular BLACK FOODIE adventures to dive deep into the world of relaxation and self care, I of course threw in some delicious eats along the way. What I discovered is that Ontario has a number of diverse wellness oriented businesses that are ready to provide incredible experiences to everyone in need of a wellness escape!
Here is how to treat yourself to a relaxing, wellness experience in Toronto – all while supporting local Black businesses.

ST Skin Tones Beauty is a new spa located in Toronto’s Oakwood Village neighbourhood. The spa offers luxury skin and body treatments for all ethnicities and skin types. The beautiful decor, tranquil music and friendly staff all add to the welcoming atmosphere and zen vibes. The ST team took their time and answered all my questions on skin and beauty as I received a detoxifying body scrub and ST signature facial. It was refreshing to walk into the spa and know that the staff understood my skin and its unique needs. I not only felt pampered throughout the experience but I also came away with really practical tips for healthier skin. If you’re looking to truly unwind, try ST’s deep tissue massage or treat yourself to one of their beauty services such as the ST signature manicure. Your skin will thank you!

Blumseed caters exclusively to the needs of the scalp. The owner creates custom treatments based on her clients hair and scalp needs, only using all natural ingredients. Her treatments come with a thorough scalp massage and recommendations for healthier hair and scalp care. Blumseed also offers a number of styling services and their own brand of all natural products. I received a treatment, scalp massage and silk press and loved the finished results. If you’re looking for a relaxing scalp massage and to indulge in a nourishing deep treatment – this is the place for you.

Fresh Paint Studio is a fun & welcoming creative space that encourages all who enter to tap into their inner artist. The owner is a multidisciplinary artist that offers several unique and engaging classes, helping participants to channel the joy that comes from creating art. I chose to drop in for a freestyle painting session and spent hours happily immersed in the painting process. The tasty lattes and great selection of music added to the vibes and were the perfect touch to get my creative juices flowing. The experience was both relaxing and rewarding. If you’re in need of a dose of inspiration, take a break and create at Fresh Paint Studio & Cafe.

Rhum Corner is the perfect place to grab a late night bite after a day of relaxation and self care. The restaurant is a small but vibrant oasis in the winter with delicious Haitian eats, great music and beautiful murals lining the walls. Rhum Corner serves up a number of delicious small plates inspired by homestyle Haitian cuisine, my favourites include the banane frites (twice fried plantains), poul ak nwa (cashew chicken) and macaroni au gratin (Haitian style mac and cheese). Bring your appetite because one plate is never enough. Pair your meal with one of Rhum Corner’s fun rum cocktails or rum filled slushies. No matter how cold it is outside, dinner at Rhum corner will warm your spirits and transport you to the islands with each sip and bite you enjoy!
