An integral part of Tanzanian cuisine, Ndizi Nyama — Swahili for “bananas and meat” — is a simple yet savory dish that packs a ton of flavor.

Using the greenest unripe, starchy bananas, a distinctly East African technique, this dish features tender meat and coconut milk making Ndizi Nyama a great dish to serve on any occasion!

Ingredients

 1.50 cups Water
1 lb Lean beef, cut into bite-sized cubes
 1.50 tsp Salt
 3 tbsp Oil
 1 Onion, sliced thinly
 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  of a ginger stem, minced
 2 Tomatoes, chopped
 1 tbsp Tomato paste
 Coconut milk
2 Green cooking bananas, peeled and cut in half

Directions

1

In a pot or pan, bring the water to a boil.

2

Add the beef, garlic, ginger, and salt.

Cover and simmer on medium-low for 15 minutes.

3

While the meat is simmering, peel your green banana and cut them in quarters.

4

Once the meat is almost cooked, add the onion, tomatoes, tomato paste, and cooking oil into the pot. Mix well and let them cook together for about 5 minutes.

Then, add the green banana pieces to the pot, cover it, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

5

Once the green bananas have softened, about 10-12 minutes in, pour in the coconut milk.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot and simmer the mixture for an additional 15 minutes.

6

Once the beef is cooked, but tender and a fork pierces the green banana easily, add salt to taste and plate.
